Turmoil

I admit that I do not know much about politics, economics, business....really any of the current affaris. I enjoy learning all that I can, and I like to have an educated opinion on things. With all that is going on with politics lately and with the stock market, I have been trying to gather information on what exactly is going on, but generally it is hard to find a variety of opinions and information. I know some find it pointless to talk about it all, but i find it interesting. So I thought it might be fun to open this up for discussion.
If anyone has any opinions they would like to share on the current economic state of things http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/Dispatch/market-dispatches-092908.aspx?GT1=33002, why it's happening, and what should be done about it, I would love to hear your opinion. There are people who say that it's just another recession coming on, and they happen every 10 years or so, and things will be fine; and then there are those who are conjuring up images of the great depression, talk of the second coming, and the end of the world. :). I guess it would be a good time to check your food storage? :).
I also think it would be interesting to hear opinions on the presidential race, as to what you think of Obama, Biden, McCain, and Palin.
P.S. I found this article today (tuesday) and I liked it. I've read several articles by this author and find them really informative and easy to understand. (it's on the current economic turmoil) http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26948627/

I have to be honest. When I hear doomsday talk, I tend to dismiss it because it's rarely as bad as the media likes to make it out to be. Remember Y2K?

But, I also think that my attitude is a little too casual at times, and something may happen, where I will be sorely unprepared.

Wow, you're brave to put it out like that. Some people feel very strongly about politics and that could be dangerous...I like the news hour on PBS at 6:00 and feel it helps inform be way better than any other news program. I also listen to NPR. NPR definitely has a liberal bias but the news hour tries really hard to not be biased (even though it can't be helped entirely). I think no one really knows about the economy. From all I've listened to experts disagree and it's all incredibly complicated and people are worried, giving possible, hopeful solution, but no one really knows--only educated guesses.

As far as politics...I wasn't too impressed with the first debate and actually thought McCain did better. I find it scary to think of Palin as president, so if McCain's elected I think I would keep him and his health in my prayers. I'm impressed with McCain's character and his track record of standing for what he believes in regardless of party lines. I'm also impressed with Obama's ability to speak and think he could help a nation that needs encouragement as well as bridge good relations with other countries despite his lack of experience--I think the fact that he's already super popular around the world would help him just as much if not more so than experience as far as foreign relations go. Sometimes I feel like he just talks and doesn't give specifics. I'd like the hear more specifics. I agree with Obama's tax plan much more than with McCain's. I'm all for alternative energy and think Obama will do a better job of handling the environment and preparing for the future instead of just quick fixes which is what I think McCain is after. (As you can tell, I support Obama more, but I do respect McCain and think he would be good even though I don't agree with him on everything.)

And just a side note about Palin and the press--ADOPTION WAS NEVER EVEN CONSIDERED!!! It was like it's right not to have an abortion so her daughter did the right thing in marrying someone completely unprepared to be a father (not like any of us are prepared). But still, I feel like the third and best option wasn't even brought up.

addendum--not that I think it should matter anyway what Sarah Palin's daughter did/does. It's never good to judge the parent so heavily on a child's behavior and we don't know the whole story. However, I think I was more annoyed at all the responses from different groups. It just seemed like adoption never came up and that annoys me.

In regards to putting out this article, is is a risk with all the deep tensions regarding politics and the economy, but i figure I have a pretty safe audience for my blog, and I don't anticipate any hate mail or nasty comments. Thank you Kristina and Charity for your comments, it seems most people don't want to even "go there" when it comes to such issues, and I understand that. I definately think I lean towards McCain, I don't agree with a lot of things Obama says or believes. I think he would make a great leader, but lead us in the wrong direction. But we can definately still be friends Charity, cause I like that we are different. Adds interest to life. I agree, I think Palin's daughter definately should have considered adoption instead of "hey lets get married."

I forgot to comment last night, but I had to laugh when I saw your comment about the calling. I get emails/comments from my blog sent to my phone, and when I saw your comment, I was sitting outside the Branch President's office, waiting to meet with him for a calling!

We are overseeing the Visiting Teaching/Home Teaching program for our branch. Fun!

Hey Andrea, I know we have a lot of this stuff on our blog but I have to admit I am not into politics. I just know that I am conservative because when I do listen that is who I agree with. As for the economy, I'm sure there will be hard times but I'm sure we will recover. "Come what may and love it", right? I don't really give too much thought to it. I just try to make smart decisions and I know whatever happens we will find a way to work through it. I have a lot of formal education but I feel like I should have a better understanding of what's happening in the world and how it affects me. I do know one thing, though, I'm voting YES on PROP 8!
